Mahjong Kaki

Tuesday, September 20th, 2005

Finally….after all these years of shining away from this chinese customary deck game adored by chinese folks for centuries , I can actually tell people that I can play mahjong…. all thanks to the intensive tutorial courtesy of Eric and Weien….and with loads of love and support from my beloved housemate, Gwen.

Let me mark this historical event down….

It was a monday night and I just got back from KL. Gwen and I tentatively had planned to catch a movie but there weren’t any good movie worth watching. So we hung out at starbucks and I invited Eric and Weien to join us. Then eric suggested we head back to my place and play mahjong till 3am coz he has to work later at 3.30pm and have no intention of sleeping till then. Coincidentally gwen planned do to the same as her flight was at 5am… So after stocking up on loads of chips and booze we head back to my place.

We officially began the mahjong session at 12.30am… Both Eric and Weien were too generous with all the info that I was overloaded trying to digest all the rules and regulations of the game. And too make things more difficult for.. I had trouble recognizing all the chinese characters on the tiles thanks to my lack of chinese vocabulary… hence i was dubbed a ‘potato’ that night..which reminded me of a debate me and gwen had earlier with eric and weien. (I’ll elaborate on that in my next entry).

Anyway after 30mins of intensive and dedicated preachings by Master Eric n Weien, I readyplay my first game but of course with assistance. Weien was kind enough to help me throughout the game though know I can’t help feeling that he might have used that to his advantage.. But none the less I couldn’t have finish the game without his help.

After a few rounds of familiarizing I actually won 1 round… woohoo… I could feel the excitement and joy of winning… Now i understand why mahjong can be such and addictive game… heck I think I’m already addicted to it….and it all happen in less than 3 hours.

And all this, I give credit to my 2 tutors. If were not for their patience (eric was yawning sarcastically throughout the game) and excellent explanation…. I would never have experience the joy of playing mahjong….so now I can say that I’m once step closer to my chinese roots…and further away from being labeled a ‘banana’…or in some case a ‘potato’…this calls for a celebration…soon… Cheers!!!
