Christchurch
Thursday, October 13th, 2005I had the most awesome trip in chirstchurch..and to think in the beginning I was dreading to go there. I remembered once upon a time telling my ex that New Zealand was never gonna be on my list of places I want to visit. When he told me he wanted to bring me there for holiday and my remarked was ‘New Zealand?? What is there to do there besides looking at grass and sheeps’. Hahaha… I SO take that back now….
Chirstchurch is such a beautiful place that I don’t mind sitting on top of a hill and just stare at grass and sheeps with the cooling breeze in my face. To top it up I had a great set of company with me. My time there was mostly spent with the set of tech crew that flew in with us. Upon reaching there the first day I went out for dinner with the Captain (Craig) and the 2 First Officers ( Fardel and Amar ) as my other colleagues were either still sleeping or too lazy to go out for dinner. Cpt Craig took us to this joint called ‘Coyote’ where we had Italian food. Me and the captain ordered the pueblo chicken salad, while Fardel and Amar took the tomato cream pasta. My salad was scrumptious. We took a walk around Christchurch after our meal, just enjoying the tranquility and cool air before retiring for the night.
The next morning I got a call from Fardel and he suggested to rent a car so that we take a drive somewhere after lunch. However as the weather forecast indicated showers in the afternoon we scrap the plan and just went for lunch instead. So Fardel, Amar, Kar Lyn and Jessica and I heading to the walking street for lunch at some food court we stumble upon. After lunch we headed to the visitors’ site office we were consolidated on all the ‘to-do’ activities available for visitors in chirstchurch. We decided to go for the tram and Gondola package with costs NZ$25. But before that we went to the Aquarium that was located within the visitors’ site office premises. The ticket per adult was NZ$12 but after my efforts of pestering the ticket officer to give us a discount he charged only NZ$10 for the girls. The aquarium was mostly a showcase on local marine lifeforms but we did manage to see the infamous kiwi birds. We couldn’t take any pictures of it though because the kiwis are only active at night and are sensitive to light.
After the aquarium, we proceeded to our tram ride around Christchurch. Jessica did not joined us then and headed back to the hotel. The tram ride lasted for only 15minutes and after that we catched a bus to Gondola. It a 30minutes ride there and the fare costs about NZ$2 per trip. When we reach Gondola we took a cable car up to the hills….and the view on top there was magnificent….it was the highlight of the trip but yet I can put it into words of how spectacular the sight and the feeling I was experiencing there. So just refer to the pictures. We could even see Quail Island from up there.
We spent a good hour plus there just taking in the fresh air and soaking in mother nature’s wonderful creation of the gondola hills. We waited till the sunset before we made our move back to Christchurch.
We were all so tired by the time we reached the hotel and it was dinner time by then. So me and kar lyn called up the rest of the crew to join us for dinner at the thai joint nearby the hotel. Only Fang and another 2 F.O joined us there. Joseph, David and Gerard were already at the thai restaurant when we reach there. The food was relatively ok there, but for me it was the company that mattered more. Anyway after dinner we proceeded to the coffee house at the hotel lobby for some drinks and dessert of course. A meal is never complete without dessert. We saw a lot of the other patrons there digging into this humongous bowl of ice cream. It’s called ‘nightmare ice cream’. We took the liberty of trying it for ourselves and man was it good. We licked the bowl clean n pray that we won’t get nightmares later.
After that all of us retired for the day as it was time to head back home the next morning. Well and that wraps up the entire exciting day. It has been one hell of an experience, one that I will always treasure and look back upon.
